BMR Jazz Band at the Millville Library Delights the Community

On July 23, the BMR Jazz Band at the Millville Library brought swing, soul, and small-town magic to the Millville Library’s front lot. With lively tunes, fresh lemonade, and homemade charm, the free concert brought about 30 attendees together on a beautiful summer afternoon.

The talented student musicians from Blackstone-Millville Regional High School showed off the same skill and energy that earned them a gold medal at the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education’s competition earlier this year—officially ranking them among the best high school jazz bands in the state.

A First-Ever Student Performance at the Library

This was the first time the Millville Library had ever hosted a student music performance, and it won’t be the last.

Library Director Alyssa Thompson said the idea had been percolating for a while. “The Library Board of Trustees and I had been talking about how we’d love to offer a live concert to our patrons,” she explained.

The event came together thanks to Clover Maloney, a Junior Friends volunteer and a member of the BMR Jazz Band. Recognizing the group’s interest in performing again this summer, Clover suggested the idea to the library and handled much of the coordination herself—right down to bringing lemonade and donuts for guests to enjoy.

Organized by Students, Backed by Community

Once the date was set, Clover contacted band members to confirm availability and made sure everything ran smoothly. Though their usual director, Mr. Nicholas Marcotte, was unavailable that day, BMR’s Music Director Mr. Todd Shafer kindly stepped in to lead the performance and even transported all the gear—music stands, speakers, and drums—to the library.

From start to finish, the concert was a wonderful example of what happens when student initiative meets community support.
