Say Hello to Captain: Blackstone’s New Comfort Dog
Earlier this year, the Blackstone Police Department announced a new comfort dog program—and now, their pup officially has a name. After a naming contest in school, the Blackstone comfort dog Captain is ready to step into his role as a calming and compassionate presence in the community. The dog’s name was shared by Len Gosselin of Loyal Guardian Kennels, who has been involved in supporting local training efforts.
The name “Captain” was the top choice in a student vote, after a shortlist of options was created by Officer Niemczyk’s daughters. It’s a fitting title for a dog who’ll help lead the way toward stronger mental health and wellness—both within the department and across town.

Captain’s training is a collaborative effort between Loyal Guardian Kennels and Stonewall Canine. Together, they’re working to ensure he’s prepared to be a calm, comforting presence in schools, at public events, and in times of crisis.
Loyal Guardian Kennels, where Captain got his start, is a family-run facility with deep ties to law enforcement. Owner Len Gosselin shared:
“I was happy to assist Blackstone when they asked. Both my wife and I are retired Bellingham officers—where I was responsible for the K-9 program from 1993 to 2022.”

Loyal Guardian Kennels has a proud history of raising working dogs that go on to serve in police departments, comfort programs, and search and rescue efforts. Captain joins a growing list of pups from their care who are making a difference in their communities.
Captain is part of a comfort dog program supported by local trainers like Stonewall Canine, who works closely with community dogs and their handlers. Organizations like Loyal Guardian Kennels have also played a role in preparing dogs for their important work in the community. The program reflects a shared effort to bring care, education, and support to both people and animals in Blackstone.
Residents, students, and town officials alike have been excited to meet Captain—from his first introductions to his recent photo ops. You’ll likely start seeing him more frequently as he settles into his new role. Whether it’s in a school hallway, town building, or public event, Captain is here to serve with heart—and a wagging tail.
A big thanks to Len Gosselin for sharing these adorable photos of Captain! You can follow more of his work at Loyal Guardian Kennels.
