Stop Flushing Wet Wipes to Prevent Costly Sewer Damage

The Blackstone Department of Public Works (DPW) is urging residents to stop flushing wet wipes—even those labeled as “flushable”—down toilets. Despite the misleading label, flushable wipes do not break down like toilet paper and are wreaking havoc on the town’s sewer system.
“They wrap around the pumps, clog them up, and cause major equipment damage,”
Pumps, previously valued at $8,000, are now double the cost — $16,000! These expenses strain the sewer system’s budget, and according to the Water and Sewer Commission, if the issue continues, sewer rates may need to increase.
“All it’s going to do is increase the sewer rates if this continues,” Water and Sewer commission members noted during their April 10 meeting.
Why This Matters
Flushed wet wipes can clog sewer lines and damage pumps, leading to backups and equipment failures. Repairing or replacing these pumps can cost between $6,000 and $16,000, not including labor and contractor fees. Such expenses strain the town’s sewer budget and could result in increased sewer rates for residents.

What You Can Do
- Do not flush ANY wipes — baby wipes, cleaning wipes, makeup wipes, or so-called “flushable” wipes.
- Only toilet paper and human waste should go down the toilet.
- Spread the word to family and neighbors to help protect our sewer system and keep costs down for everyone.
Let’s work together to avoid unnecessary damage and rising rates. When in doubt, throw it out — not down the toilet.
