Who’s on the April 7 Election Ballot for Blackstone?

The Annual Town Election in Blackstone is scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025, from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Residents will have the opportunity to vote for candidates across various town positions. To make informed decisions, it’s essential to understand the ballot’s structure, the candidates running, and the implications of write-in options.
Positions on the Ballot
While the official Specimen Ballot provides the definitive list of positions and candidates, typical roles up for election include:
- Board of Selectmen
- School Committee
- Board of Health
- Planning Board
- Board of Assessors
- Constable
- Collector-Treasurer
- Parks & Recreation Commission
- Town Clerk
Each position plays a crucial role in shaping the policies and operations of Blackstone’s local government.
Understanding Write-In Votes
In instances where a position lacks a full slate of candidates, voters have the option to write in the name of a preferred individual. For example, if there are five seats available for Constable but only four candidates listed, voters can write in a fifth candidate of their choice. It’s important to ensure that any write-in candidate meets the necessary qualifications for the position.
What Happens When There Are Fewer Candidates Than Open Seats?
When the number of candidates is less than or equal to the number of available seats, those listed candidates are typically elected by default. However, the remaining seat(s) can be filled through:
- Write-In Candidates: As mentioned, voters can write in eligible individuals. If a write-in candidate receives a sufficient number of votes and accepts the position, they can assume the role.
- Appointments: If no write-in candidates are elected, the vacancy may be filled according to town bylaws, often through an appointment process by the Board of Selectmen or relevant authority.
